seclusive (adjective)- preferring to be alone, away from other people

Welcome to my little corner of the web!

My name is Molly and I live near Lake Michigan in Wisconsin with my husband, Mike, and our four rescue cats - Hazel, Floki, Ivar, and Torvi (plus several more cats & dogs in spirit).

I chose Seclusive Nature as my handle because Mike and I are very introverted and feel most ourselves when we’re alone (or together), especially in wild areas.

Mike and I both have wanderlust in our veins. We love to explore, especially now that we have a camper van for our adventures. We are also huge fans of all animals, which is the main reason we went vegan in 2006. Our vegan journey has been an adventure of its own which we enjoy tremendously.

I’m an avid reader, a bit of a notebook (& bandana) junkie, and a fervent nature lover. I am also quite fond of street art and a firm believer in embracing your wild.

Flickr is the only platform I’m active online. I use it as a creative outlet as well as a visual journal, a microblog, and for organization of my photos & videos. While I’m not here for the social aspects, I hope my posts bring some joy to others.

You can find more posts about me here- www.flickr.com/photos/seclusivenature/albums/721777203195...

Thanks so much for visiting!

“By discovering nature, you discover yourself.” -Maxine Lagace’

Embracing your wild doesn’t necessarily mean being loud, partying, or doing extreme things. To me, it means realizing deeply how much I need nature and how important it is overall. It means accepting myself for everything that I am, including the dark and savage parts. It means being a bit feral when it comes to being around other people and feeling most at peace when I’m alone (or with Mike), especially at home or in the wilderness. It means feeling my best when I have dirt on my feet, wind blown hair, and skin kissed by the sun. It means having a connection to animals that I struggle with when it comes to humans. It’s that part of me that’s still a child, happy and carefree, running through the forest and fields, climbing trees and getting dirty. For me, embracing my wild means keeping that wild child part of me alive.

This patch of daisies is growing in the field behind our house and I’ve really delighted in seeing it out there.

“Solitary trees, if they grow at all, grow strong.” -Winston Churchill

Just like being outside in nature, being on the outside of others is a comfort. It’s freedom. It feels like home, just as the outdoors do. When I was younger, I tried to fit in with others. Now, I realize I never did because I was never meant to. I like being apart from the rest (with Mike as the sole exception) because I feel most myself in solitude. I’m an outsider, a recluse, and an extremely seclusive person, which I fully embrace. My self worth & love are not found in others but in myself and I am never lonely because I understand myself. With that understanding has come strength and confidence. If that’s not freedom, then I don’t know what is.

We drive past this lone tree on the shore of Lake Michigan from time to time and it always catches my eye. It’s alone, away from other trees, yet it flourishes and is unique, strong, & beautiful.

I’ve wanted a VW camper van for as long as I can remember. Or, really, any place of my own (but I especially loved those vans- and still do!). Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was relax & read in a tent that my dad put up in our back yard. It was my own little sanctuary of solitude.

Large dwellings have never appealed to me. It’s the small habitats that have called to me- campers, tents, treehouses, small houses. I’ve always felt most like myself when in nature and small dwellings keep us closer to the outdoors. They nurture the wild in me while keeping things simple. Less to own and care for/maintain means more time for what really matters. More time to enjoy life, doing the things we love alone and with each other. More living. More freedom.

Going vegan didn’t come easy for me. I knew I should do it, but I fought it. I questioned it. I could forget it….. for a while. Finally, I could no longer ignore it or deny it, especially when I had the support of Mike to do it with.

We went vegan together in July of 2006 and suddenly, I wondered what took me so long. What was once in my mind as a hard, insurmountable task became easy. Now, it’s second nature.

Being vegan makes me feel more like “me”. It feels natural. It’s such a large part of my values and who I am that the time before it seems alien to me now.

This photo is from the inside of Urban Beets in Wauwatosa. They have plants growing all over the place and we found the entire cafe quite delightful!
