The triumphal arch at the end of the pedestrian street Rua Augusta opens up on to Commerce Square. It has been recently restored and is now not only very clean and repaired but is also open to visitors who want to go up to the observation level. The arch was constructed in 1755 following an earthquake in the same year as a celebration of the reconstruction of the city following the quake. It was only completed in 1875.

The top of the arch is adorned with sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels of allegorical figures featuring Glory crowning Genius and Valor who sit on either side of Glory. On the lower levels of the arch there are more figures this time by Vitor Bastos. Bastos’ sculptures are of famous Portuguese figures including Vasco da Gama, Pereira and Viriato. Two reclining figures represent the Tagus River and Douro River. On the side of the arch facing Rue Augusta there is a clock, stone reliefs and filigree decoration. The arch has six columns reaching 11 meters high and the cornice is 30 meters high. It features the Portuguese coat of arms.

Visitors can go up to the top of the monumental arch by elevator for panoramic views over Terreiro do Paço Square, the Baixa district, Lisbon Cathedral, St. George’s Castle and the Tagus River. While inside the arch you can learn about the history of the arch from an exhibition entitled “ Sala do Relogio.” The arch featured in the Ted Danson version of Gulliver’s Travels when Gulliver was wheeled through the arch in Lilliput.

Praça do Comércio is one of the most emblematic places in Lisbon. This picturesque square, bordered to the south by the Tagus River, is flanked on the other three sides by white and yellow Pombaline buildings. It is a leading tourist hub due to its many quality shops, bars and restaurants.

Exploring the square on foot is a great way to enjoy its historic vibe. Here you will see an equestrian sculpture of King José I as well as the 30-metre-high Triumphal Arch on Augusta Street. The arch platform offers stunning views of Praça do Comércio, the Tagus River and part of central Lisbon.

When the wind blows from the North East the swell gets picked up in the Irish Sea and hits the East coast. With a big wind this can give plenty of big waves and spray. The fishing harbour was built to give protection from these winds and stormy seas.
