Another shot from Flickr user m20wc51, once again of what was left of Nagasaki's Catholic Cathedral after the atomic bomb blast, some five hundred meters away. This shot shows the amazing work of the bricklayers and masons in building the structure, without using the sort of steel skeleton which became common in the early twentieth century.

Photo taken by Joseph Jowell; original shot is here.

Another shot from the collection of the Air Force photographer stationed at K-2 (1951-53), courtesy of Flickr user m20wc51. This is the pony which we can see in the background of the shot of the Sergeant and the cabbages, and appears to be the same embankment visible in the Bus Stop shot. Impossible to say whether this is a draft animal or a riding animal, but the former seems the more likely possibility, maybe to turn mills that grind various grains. I don't know much about horses, but this one looks reasonably well cared for, not underweight, seemingly, and with a smooth coat.

Original shot can be found here, and you can see that the shadows are fairly thick and lacking in detail. I wasn't able to get much out of them without compromising kthe overall colour rendition.

Another shot courtesy of Flickr user m20wc51, which may be an image of the photographer who took a whole slew of photos over two years stationed at K-2 airbase in Korea. I'm not sure of that myself, because the qualities of a number of photos taken at this location (along a riverbank) are a close match, and this particular Sergeant seems to have his own camera slung around his neck.

Note that in the background of this shot, towards the right, we see a small pony along the ridgeline; the photographer took a closer shot of the animal, which I may post later.

Original shot can be found here, for purposes of comparison.

This is one of a number of photos from Flickr user m20wc51, that I've worked on, in at least one case, for over two years. As my skills have sharpened a bit, and Photoshop cleaning tools have improved enormously, I can finally get around to finishing and posting them. I'll be posting about a dozen or so in the next few days (Jan 2025) and will distinguish them by using black borders rather than (period accurate) white borders.

Note that there are certain sorts of damage and defects that are virtually impossible to remove, for example, damage and cracks to the emulsion itself, especially where the damage radiates out from an initial breach of the emulsion layer. While it's possible to remove those, doing so also removes significant portions of the original image.

Why black borders? Simply because I can't immediately identify from where in m20wc51's large collection these individual shots originate. As I'm able to do so, I will provide links, but for now, they'll be simply glimpses of vanished world and way of life.

Okay, I found this one pretty quickly. Taken by a US Airforce person, possibly a Sergeant. You can find it here. This photographer shot a number of others I've already posted, but not yet linked.

This is the last of the "Busan" shots showing the cleaning and scouring crews. Shot courtesy of Flickr user m20wc51, and taken by an unknown sailor on a container ship (which were a good deal smaller in 1971 than they are currently).

There appear to be containers still on the ship, and in the wider shots, you can see trucks waiting to take containers away, so I assume that this particular ship was offloading at least some of its cargo.

Original shot can be found here, and, as can be seen, it was in decent shape, though somewhat faded.
