This shadowy building sits surrounded by bright car parks, bust blocks of flats and shopping centres.

The sheer value of this unused real estate must be enormous. Over in Quarry Bay, there’s a large block of flats that is dark and grimy. As Michael and I looked across to it, we both noticed the sound of rushing water. Somewhere in that deserted block there’s a leak. It’s probably beyond repair but there wasn’t anything in the way of public signage about redevelopment. I wonder how much longer it’ll be left like this?

I know, I know. Hong Kong, again! I’m not wealthy- I just keep spending all my money on going there. I don’t think they say ‘Fourth Times the Charm’ but this trip was just that - a success. For almost the entire time I kept my mental health issues at bay. It was a good trip. After three disasters - It is really nice to say that.

One of many incidents of vertigo on this trip to Hong Kong. Setting up the shot (doing my neck no favours, I’m sure), my legs went all wobbly as I looked up to the top of the tower. Urrgh…

Thanks to Michael (and he should surely, legally and morally, take all the blame), we found ourselves where we shouldn’t have been once again. I really don’t know how he does it- he has a radar for finding a way in that he wouldn’t have any idea of beforehand.

As the vertigo continued, I looked at the intricate overlapping pipes that wormed around the building. Beautiful in their own way.

“Will we have rainbows, day after day?” [...] “Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be”

I thought of those lyrics when looking through my finished photographs and stopping at this one. A lot of my photographs show the ‘nicer’, more tourist-facing parts of the city- of course, as an anxious person, those are the areas I feel safest. This shot was taken from the second floor of a somewhat uninviting car park, looking out over the awnings of a small shopping street in Quarry Bay. The smell of the rubbish and grime was palpable and as I looked over the small area, a great melancholy came over me- looking into the small, grubby windows and imagining a life surrounded by all the muck.

What was a slightly overwhelming hike up a small hill ended up getting even steeper. Looking for a view over that overpass from the previous shot, we skirted around the edges of the area, looking for a gap between the endless wall of buildings.

On this particular Hong Kong trip, other than alleyways and backstreets, I really wanted to capture more up-close details of people’s windows and the tower blocks they live in (without being intrusive). All those details in the window frames and pipe work- it’s the sort of thing that usually gets lost in my wide-angle photographs.

Michael and I are keen to immerse ourselves in the cultures of the places we travel to. So, on our way up this hill, underneath this tall overpass, we stopped off at McDonalds. Marvelling at the local chocolate sundaes and how truly fantastical it was compared to the boring options back in the UK.

So, chomping our way through the delicious local cuisine, we swerved around groups of students and made our way up the hill. Stopping multiple times on the way (all entirely my need- Michael could climb a mountain without complaining), I looked back and took this shot of the little valley between the towers.
