Notes: This is an eastern species occurring from Nova Scotia west to Manitoba and North Dakota and south to Texas and northern Florida. This spider has been found in low herbaceous vegetation and the leaf litter in hardwood forests. Male TBL 4.1-9.6 mm.
According to G. B. Edwards (2004), this is the only member of the genus Phidippus that is found primarily near the ground in forests.

Male Maevia inclemens dimorphic jumping spider in plain form.
Single exposure, hand held, diffused flash.
Notes: The plain form males attract the females faster at closer distances. The tufted form dances in a stilted upright stance, waving his front legs while held high. The tufted males are attractive to the females at a greater distance. Thus each form of male has a particular advantage. Male TBL 4.8-7.0 mm.
