When I was exploring the land and roads around Curlew National Grassland in Idaho a couple of years ago, I found myself on this long canyon road with dark clouds moving in.
But the road was new to me and in various states of decay. I'm on these kinds of roads quite a bit, but each one is different. I've never gotten stuck (came VERY close a number of times), but I'm always cautious and anxious.
This means that I rarely stop to photograph or even enjoy the scenery. I get into the mentality of needing to make it out alive. That's important, of course, but I leave so many memorable and treacherous situations unphotographed.
Coming out of the canyon, I saw this scene. It wasn't much, but I was struck enough by it to try my best to capture it.
