The country church at Þingeyrar in NW-Iceland was the first church built of stone in Iceland, finished in 1877. The building was commissioned by farmer and parliamentarian Ásgeir Einarsson. Þingeyrar has a proud ecclesiastical history, as it was the site of the first monastery in Iceland, established in 1133 and functioning until the advent of Lutheranism in the mid-1500s.
