Comings and goings at Knaresborough Station.

This is the final photograph from a delightful afternoon photographing between Harrogate and Knaresborough.

This shot is a mixture of two images, I needed 8000 ISO at 1/80th second to capture the trains, it was a simultaneous arrival and departure, this was blended it with an ISO 160 1.0 second exposure shot after the trains had departed.

For the records, the Northern units are 2C57 16:42 York to Leeds with 170474 and 2C18 16:29 Leeds to York with 170461.

This sturdy trio were on shed at Newton Heath when Peter visited on the 20th April 1968. This was the year when steam officially ended on British Railways, two of the loco's would last until the 29th of June, the other until the 10th.
We were promised a glittering future with sleek modern trains wafting us around the network in comfort.
We got overcrowded, stinking Voyagers, and trains which stop working when they get wet. A railway system which would always be a political football with some of the highest fares in Europe. A railway where infrastructure projects run over budget by billions, as every set of experts and planners get their snouts in the trough.
44780 was built at Crewe Works 07/47, it was withdrawn 29/06/1968 and scrapped by Cohens (Cargo Fleet) 10/68
45203 was built by Armstrong Whitworth 11/1935, withdrawn 29/06/1968 scrapped 02/69.
45421 built by Armstrong Whitworth 10/1937, withdrawn 10/02/1968 and scrapped 06/1968.
