This image shows our crews catching fish and other aquatic life to move them up or downstream of the project area. We do this during a period of time when fish are less likely to be migrating or spawning. This is why a lot of fish passage work happens in summer. This site is part of a project where we removed barriers to fish along US 101 near Forks in summer 2024.

When we talk about in-water work for a fish passage project, only part of it is actually done in the water. In this image, our workers are installing a net upstream of the site. Fish and other aquatic life are moved up or downstream from the project. The net prevents them from coming into the work area again. Once all aquatic animals are moved, we drain the stream and reroute it temporarily through a pipe. Then we work to rebuild the stream channel. This work is part of a project to remove barriers to fish along US 101 near Forks in summer 2024.

Workers use heavy equipment to dig at a fish passage site in Jefferson County south of Forks. We replaced an outdated culvert with a large arch culvert at this location in summer 2024.

A lot of earthwork goes into fish passage projects. This image shows our crews building a soldier pile wall. The wall is a temporary structure that holds the dirt in place during excavation. This site is part of a project where we worked to improve fish passage under US 101 near Forks in summer 2024.

Workers widen northbound US 101 east of Forks to make room for a temporary bypass road. We use bypass roads to keep people moving around some fish passage work zones. This site is part of a project to remove barriers to fish under the highway in Jefferson and Clallam counties.
