A gas-powered saw is used to cut the cable from one end of the log. It's heavier than your standard chain saw and this guy is reaching as far out as he safely can to reach the cable, while keeping his footing right along the edge of the powerful river. The water is snow runoff from Mount Baker, and is deep and as cold as a bucket filled with ice water.
