The West Fork Hylebos Creek near Federal Way runs way too fast for fish.
As part of WSDOT's project to replace the culvert that carries the creek under SR 99, crews will also regrade and realign the stream to create more inviting habitat for Chinook, coho and chum salmon.
Those large logs are known as "weirs." They function as stepladders for fish. The problem is some of them have created such large drops, that fish just can't get over them.
Crews will remove these and create a more meandering stream with a slower water flow.
This work will open several additional miles of upstream habitat in the Hylebos Watershed.
