A busy intersection in Vancouver is subject of a pilot program to add visibility for bike lanes. Both cyclists and freight haulers make regular trips through this area. The bike lane on SR 501 can disappear through right turn lanes and the intersection. As part of a pilot project, WSDOT will add green paint to existing bike lanes to add visibility for cyclists. Work is scheduled to begin in early November, 2015. 1.usa.gov/1PhGLvJ

Drivers who use SR 501 near West Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver have a new tool to help drivers spot cyclists through busy the intersection.

In Nov. 2015, WSDOT maintenance crews added green paint in the bike lanes at the intersection.

The paint is designed to hold up to heavy vehicle traffic and rainy northwest weather, while still providing roadway friction for bicycle tires.

This photo shows the material that crews add to the paint for increased traction.

While adding green paint to bike lanes is not a new concept, this is the first application by WSDOT on a state highway. The results of this pilot project will help determine broader benefits of bike lane enhancements across the state.

In addition to enhancing safety and promoting multimodal use of SR 501, WSDOT is testing a durable green paint for potential use on future projects.

The plan was developed in partnership with the city of Vancouver, who maintains and operates SR 501 through city limits. Under the terms of this pilot project, WSDOT will be responsible for upkeep of the new bike lane markings.

In west Vancouver, roadway users vary; some have two wheels and some have four, some have six and some have more.

While not one cyclist or freight hauler is like another, both make frequent trips through the intersection of State Route 501 at West Fourth Plain Boulevard. This is why in Nov. 2015, WSDOT launched a pilot project to add green paint to existing bike lanes for improved visibility.
