During the early morning hours of Nov. 11, several trees that were approximately three foot in diameter fell on power lines adjacent to State Route 3 in Mason County and brought the lines down on to the highway. When live wires touch asphalt, this can happen. Mason County PUD 3 estimated that 6,000 degree Fahrenheit temperatures scorched a section of asphalt on SR 3 at milepost 7 after several trees fell, bringing the live wires down on the highway. The asphalt was so hot, it was boiling the water that maintenance crews were using to help cool the roadway. WSDOT maintenance had the roadway repaired by 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11.
