The first new Cummins engine is lowered into a Siemens Charger locomotive body in this Siemens USA photo. The 4,400-horsepower engine will power all the locomotives in the six-state purchase agreement. This engine and locomotive are bound for Illinois. WSDOT’s eight American-made Chargers will be delivered in late 2016 and be in service in spring 2017.

The Cummins QSK95 engines being installed in WSDOT’s new locomotives are truly massive. The 4,400-horse power engines are 8-foot tall and weigh 42,000 pounds with top speeds of 125 mph. The engines also meet new, stringent emissions standards.
