In September 2016, contractor crews working for WSDOT replaced an undersized culvert that carries South Creek under SR 161 at milepost 12.85 in Pierce County. The work required SR 161 to close to all vehicles from just south of 304th Street East/Kapowsin Highway East for an entire weekend. This work opened up five square miles of spawning habitat for a variety of salmon species. This work is related to WSDOT’s ongoing effort to improve fish passage and reconnect streams.
