During overnight hours of Tuesday, May 09, 2017, crews delivered and set this massive girder. While all northbound I-5 traffic in Tumwater was diverted through the 93rd Avenue
interchange, this large crane used those lanes as a location to move the girder from a large semi-truck to the bridge. The girder replacement became necessary after an overheight vehicle punched a hole in the bridge girder above I-5 on Sept. 13, 2015, causing damage. During overnight hours of Friday, May 5, crews working for WSDOT demolished the remaining elements of a previously damaged girder. The heavy equipment and the rubble are both on the northbound lanes of I-5 in Tumwater. During the work, all northbound lanes were diverted through the 93rd Avenue exit and on-ramps. The girder was damaged by an over-height load in 2015. Crews will install a new girder to replace the bridge element that had been damaged.

A crane operator and crews on the ground skillfully remove a large girder from a semi-truck. The girder will help makeup the backbone of the 93rd Avenue bridge over Interstate 5 in Tumwater. The key bridge element required replacement after being struck by an overheight load in 2015. While this operation was underway, all northbound I-5 was diverted traffic through the interchange. WSDOT typically does this work at night in an attempt to minimize disruptions to traffic. The girder installation occurred during overnight hours of Tuesday, May 9, 2017
