The existing culvert under US 12 has been identified as a barrier to fish. It is located just west of Devonshire Road in Montesano. This project will improve fish passage and open up potential fish habitat for approximately two miles.

Beginning July 26, US 12 near Devonshire Road will be reduced from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction for an around-the-clock summer-long traffic shift. The speed limit will also lower from 60 mph to 25 mph through the one mile construction zone. Work is expected to wrap up later this fall.
The first traffic shift will move vehicles onto the eastbound lanes, allowing the north half of the structure to be built. Then, the second traffic shift will move vehicles onto the newly-constructed westbound lanes while the south half of the structure is built. Due to the narrow work zone and traveler lanes, pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured through Devonshire Road and Alder Grove Road. Crews anticipate fully reopening the highway to all traffic later this fall.

Drivers are now following a newly aligned section of highway west of Devonshire Road in Montesano. The temporary roadway configuration gives the crews room to remove and replace the culvert that has been identified as a barrier to fish passage.
