The SR 99 Aurora bridge was last painted about 35 years ago. Over time, the paint wears out and begins to flake off.

During spring 2018 the work on the bridge had to shift because a pair of falcons built a nest and had a fledgling that we named Gerry. You can see him on the edge of the nest at the center of the picture.

Rivets hold together the SR 99 Aurora bridge steel, probably hundreds of thousands of rivets. No one seems to know precisely how many rivets are on the bridge. This detailed photo alone has more than 250 rivets showing, and it's just one small part of the bridge. During the painting, though, every rivet was inspected and a few thousand were replaced.
