Mike Stanford, our avalanche forecast and control supervisor for Stevens Pass and the North Cascades Highway, greets those attending our Inter Agency Avalanche Rescue Training, held at our Berne Maintenance Facility, west of Leavenworth on Dec. 13.

Attendees from local and state agencies as well as private organizations attended the training to become familiar with basic first response search and rescue techniques in the event of an avalanche, specifically along the many mountainous state highways.

Harlan Sheppard, our avalanche forecast and control specialist for Stevens Pass and the North Cascades Highway, addresses attendees at our Inter Agency Avalanche Rescue Training, held at our Berne Maintenance Facility, west of Leavenworth on Dec. 13.

Attendees would be instructed in and practice avalanche search and rescue techniques that would be used after witnessing an avalanche situation, or upon responding to an avalanche situation impacting vehicles or individuals.

John Stimberis, our avalanche forecast and control supervisor for Snoqualmie and White passes, demonstrated the use of an avalanche beacon at our Inter Agency Avalanche Rescue Training held at our Berne Maintenance Facility, west of Leavenworth on Dec. 13.

An avalanche beacon can be used to both send out a distress locator as well as search for the beacon signal of someone who has been buried by an avalanche.

Participants practice using an avalanche probe to search the snow for a buried object during our Inter Agency Avalanche Rescue Training, held at our Berne Maintenance Facility, west of Leavenworth on Dec. 13.

Rescuers will use a probe to search buried objects after an avalanche incident has occurred.

Training participants practice using shovels to dig for a buried object that has been located under the snow in a simulated avalanche incident during our Inter Agency Avalanche Rescue Training, held at the our Berne Maintenance Facility, west of Leavenworth on Dec. 13.

Search and rescue personnel are trained to work together using multiple tools to help locate those buried by and avalanche incident and need assistance as quickly as can be safely accomplished.
