The old Patterson Creek culvert under SR 202 east of Sammamish was narrow. During spawning season, the water would flow too quickly through it, keeping salmon from continuing to spawning grounds upstream. The new wider culvert has a natural creek bed, opening up miles of habitat.

Prefabricated concrete culverts allow us to complete fish passage projects more quickly. In the case of SR 202 at Patterson Creek, the work was finished during the weekend of Aug. 29-30. The prefab sections are lifted into place, then creek bed material is added before the culvert is capped and buried.

Among the last steps to the SR 202 Evans and Patterson Creeks fish passage project, like most work, is repaving. By Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, our contractor crews were putting down asphalt even as water was starting to trickle through the new Patterson Creek culvert.
