With no weight, the girder on the SR 99 Duwamish River Bridge rebounds to its regular position, leaving a gap into which a pen fits. Our crews installed metal shims, or pieces of metal, to fill that gap until permanent repairs can be made in early 2021.

With the weight of a truck on top of the joint, the girder is pressed down onto a deteriorating bearing pad; when the truck moves the girder rises slightly. In the long term, this can cause further damage to the bridge, so in fall 2020 we installed pieces of metal into the gap to stop the movement.

You can see the bridge move up and down slightly when the weight of vehicles go over the end of the girder, where bearing pads have worn. As a temporary fix during fall 2020, we installed shims, or pieces or metal, to stop the bridge movement. In early 2021 we will hire a contractor to perform permanent repairs.
