This culvert under Chico Creek in the Bremerton area is one of five barriers to fish. All barriers are under both directions of SR 3 and the southbound highway on-ramps and exit ramps. A WSDOT construction project will remove these barriers and ultimately open access to about 21 miles of potential fish habitat.

Crews have made some changes to State Route 3. The changes are part a fish barrier removal project at the Chico Way interchange near Bremerton, Washington. A night single lane night closure pictured here is part of efforts to shift lanes to the outside shoulders of SR 3. The readjusted lanes allow for construction between the northbound and southbound lanes. The construction zone allows workers to build a new bridge. The new bridge will span a future realignment of Chico Creek. The approach helps keep travelers moving while removing the barriers to fish. The work is part of WSDOT’s fish barrier removal program. The program reconnects streams and improves fish access both upstream and downstream.
