The SR 509 Completion Project in the SeaTac/Des Moines, WA area includes a new Veteran's Drive tunnel under I-5. The tunnel will create a link between the southbound off-ramp (on the right) to Military Road (visible in the photo's upper left).
The tunnel will use steel arches, but there's still a lot of concrete to be poured. In this photo, a concrete pumper truck pours concrete for some of many walls.

To build the tunnel, crews are excavating from the middle of I-5, working on the west half of the tunnel first.

To build the tunnel, crews first had to slightly widen I-5 and then restripe to shift traffic away from the work zone in the middle where excavation work will begin.

Here, the beginnings of the eastbound tunnel emerge from under the northbound lanes of I-5.
Eventually, workers will excavate a second tunnel next to this one that will carry westbound traffic. After that side of the tunnel is done, we'll begin excavation on the other side, under the southbound lanes.

Part of the new Veterans Drive tunnel that will connect drivers between Military Road and the northbound I-5 exit to SR 516 begins to really take shape. The tunnel is part of the SR 509 Completion Project in the SeaTac/Des Moines/Kent, WA areas.
This photo shows the portion of the tunnel for eastbound drivers. Eventually, another section will be built for westbound drivers.
We're building the eastern half of the tunnel first, and then crews will work on the western half.
