A solemn display of 61 white hard hats and orange safety cones lined the hallway at WSDOT's building in Olympia. Each one represents a life lost on the job since 1950 - many in active work zones. WSDOT hopes to never have to add another name to the list of fallen workers.

A yellow hard hat and boots were placed on the main stage to represent Rodney C. Wheeler who passed June 2023. Mr. Wheeler was a bridge tender on the SR 99/First Avenue South Bridge in Seattle and is survived by his fiancé, their children and his parents. A portion of the ceremony honored his life and service to Washington.

The death of Rodney Wheeler brings WSDOT total number of fallen workers to 61 - many in active work zones since 1950. The Worker Memorial was a time to honor Rodney's life and service to Washington, in addition to honoring other fallen workers. The ceremony also reminds the traveling public about the importance of work zone safety ahead of a busy spring and summer construction season.
