The newly realigned SR 542 is about 100 feet from Warnick Bluff above the Nooksack River, so erosion should no longer be a problem. WSDOT contractor crews also removed the old SR 542 roadway near Glacier Springs and replanted the area with native vegetation.

Contractor crews paved the new section of SR 542 near Glacier Springs March 17-18, 2015, reopening two lanes of traffic in the late afternoon of March 18. With the highway shifted about 100 feet northeast of the old alignment, erosion from the Nooksack River should not be a issue.

The new section of SR 542 just west of Glacier Springs is shaping up. Crews are almost ready to begin paving. When the new section is open, the contractor will remove the original segment of highway on top of the bluff near the Nooksack River, and restore the land to a more natural state.

Work on the new section of SR 542 near Glacier Springs is going quickly. This image shows how close the edge of the bluff and the Nooksack River are to the old roadway and its relationship to the new section.

Contractor crews working for WSDOT had to blast a 300-foot long section of rock at the west end of the new section of SR 542, the Mount Baker Highway. Track hoes loaded dump trucks and trailers to haul away the material as work progresses on the new path for the highway, about four miles east ofMaple Falls near Glacier Springs.
