Victorian chimney stack - long cold.

Snapped with a camerphone through an open car window while waiting in traffic.

Foss Island was Yorks largest frieght railway yard bringing in goods for the chocolate works and acting as the main railhead for the North Yorkshire agricultural industry. Walking in an around the area will uncover a wealth of former railway buildings and track beds such as the line looping west to join up with the York - Scarborough line at the Rowntree (Nestle) works and crossing the Huntington Road and River Foss by a land-mark, iron bridge. This line like a many others in York, is now a public cycleway and path.

Foss Island is now earmarked for major re-development including two new superstores (Morrisons and Homebase) and no doubt this chimney stack will go?

A scene from 1925?

The LNER Class A3 Pacific locomotive number 4472 "Flying Scotsman" (originally no. 1472) was built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of H.N. Gresley. It was employed on long-distance express trains on the LNER and its the later equivalent British Railways Eastern and North-Eastern Regions, notably the 10 A.M. London to Edinburgh Flying Scotsman service after which this locomotive was named. In its career, 4472 Flying Scotsman has travelled 2,000,000 miles (3,200,000 km). From Wikipedia

The Flying Scotsman, steams past near my old home with the first 'holiday special' of summer 2005. The locomotive makes regular trips between York and Scarborough passing here up to 8 times a day. The smoke deflectors (on the front) and double chimney are later additions to the locomotive.

This is a 'real' railway line and the 'special' has to share the tracks with the regular, diesel service.

Its raining and the lady is getting a closer view from a track through a field of wheat.
