The Graben and the Plague Column
"The Plague Column [...] is a Holy Trinity column located on the Graben, a street in the inner city of Vienna, Austria. The Graben is a luxurious shopping and promenade area in the 1st district of Vienna. Together with the Kohlmarkt and the Kärntner Straße, the Graben forms Vienna's so-called "Golden U" of inner-city shopping streets, which offer upscale stores and are pedestrian zones.
Luxury stores notwithstanding, I really did go shopping there today. In fact, there is an extremely well-stocked bookshop there when it comes to French and English-language novels, which I like to read in the original: grabenwien.at/en/shops/frick-am-graben/ I bought Joseph Conrad's novel 'Nostromo', costing €15.30.
And because I also need a washing mitt for an upcoming physiotherapy treatment, I went to the well-established table, bed and terry linen store Zur Schwäbischen Jungfrau. I was served so well by the very old owner, who could see immediately which colour I preferred, that I intend to buy washing mitts there again and again. You don't get poor with €16.50 for a washing mitt. zsj.at/
