The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal), also known as the Lion of Lucerne, is a sculpture designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn between 1819 and 1821 on a rock wall in the city of Lucerne, Switzerland. It commemorates the murder of 760 mercenaries of the Swiss Guard during the French Revolution in 1792 while defending themselves against the revolutionaries' assault on the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France.
Mark Twain (1835-1910) praised the lion sculpture as ‘the saddest, most touching and telling piece of stone in the world’.
