.... here you see Thais joyfully riding a rubber alligator that I brought her from Italy. The little girl had won me over and I had won her over, when I arrived in Rio I always brought her something. One time I arrived with a Pinocchio and two dolls, one white and one black that I hid in the closets and in a drawer. When they arrived I immediately gave to Thais a box of chocolates and a big ice cream. Then, while I was talking with Sol, I suddenly told Thais that I heard a little voice, coming from the drawer, calling her, to try to open it and see what it was, she opened it and found the Pinocchio. Later I asked her if she still heard another little voice calling her from one of the closets, we went to look and found the white doll, at the end there was still someone, from the other closet, calling "Thais" and behold, the black doll smiling appeared.....

... qui vedete Thais gioiosa in groppa ad un alligatore di gomma che le avevo portato dall'Italia. M'aveva conquistato la piccola ed io avevo conquistato lei, quando arrivavo a Rio le portavo sempre qualcosa. Una volta arrivai con un Pinocchio e due bambole, una bianca ed una nera che nascosi negli armadi e in un cassetto. Quando arrivarono loro diedi subito a Thais una scatola di cioccolatini ed un grosso gelato. Poi, mentre chiacchieravo con Sol, ad un tratto dissi a Thais che sentivo una vocina, proveniente dal cassetto, che la chiamava, di provare ad aprirlo e vedere cosa fosse, lei lo aprì e trovò il Pinocchio. Più avanti le chiesi se sentiva ancora un'altra vocina che la chiamava da uno degli armadi , andammo a vedere e trovammo la bambola bianca, infine c'era ancora qualcuno, dall'altro armadio, che chiamava "Thais" ed ecco che spuntò, tutta sorridente, la bambola nera.....

the passion with Sol lasted 4 years, but we never lost sight of each other, initially I was struck by her beauty, then, knowing her better, I was struck by her kindness. To give you an example, when I met her she had a daughter 5 or 6 years old, the father of the child had run away without paying a penny for the maintenance of the little girl, Sol was a clerk in a shop of articles for tourists, she didn't earn much, and yet she had adopted another child, daughter of a friend who was not able to support her baby. After another couple of years I found her with a big belly, she was living with her new boyfriend. When the baby was born (Thais) I felt like an uncle to the baby..... la passione con Sol è durata 4 anni, ma non ci siamo mai persi di vista, inizialmente ero stato colpito dalla sua bellezza, poi, conoscendola meglio, ero stato colpito dalla sua bontà. Per farvi un esempio, quando la conobbi aveva una figlia di 5 o 6 anni, il papà della bambina se l'era svignata senza versare un soldo pel mantenimento della piccola, lei era commessa in un negozio di articoli per turisti, non guadagnava tanto, eppure aveva adottato un'altra bambina figlia di un'amica che non era in grado di mantenerla. Dopo un altro paio d'anni la ritrovai con un grande pancione, conviveva col nuovo moroso. Quando nacque la bambina (Thais) io mi sentii come uno zio per la piccola..... Here you see a float of the Mangueira samba school, the main figure is called "Carranca" a kind of figurehead of the boats that sailed the rivers (especially in the northeast of Brazil, see Recife) and that represented a divinity who protected the boat and its sailors from the bad river spirits

Qui vedete un carro della scuola di samba Mangueira, la figura principale è la "Carranca" una specie di polena delle barche che navigavano i fiumi (soprattutto del nordest del Brasile, vedi Recife) e che rappresentava una divinità che proteggeva la barca e i suoi marinai dai cattivi spiriti fluviali
