A lone house sits behind a field of cattails in this scene shot in Prince County on Prince Edward Island. For me, the building, as nice as it is, just provides a kind of visual anchor for the natural elements that comprise the bulk of the image. I love the setting and couldn't resist capturing the scene. No, the house isn't in focus, but it also isn't the subject. :-)

PEI's iconic red sandstone beaches are currently (when I took this photo in January 2025) topped with layers of transparent ice or sprinkled with white pebbly ice from the surf. Meanwhile, the sea itself begins to develop a hard icy skin as winter temperatures finally begin to find their new range below the freezing point of water.

I met this young man at the Farmer's Market in Summerside during the first Saturday market of 2025. He's an engineering student at the University of PEI and sharpens knives on the weekends to cover some of his expenses. I had my venerable Swiss Army Knife with me, of course. I've carried it everyday on my belt since the late 1980's so it's seen some very good use. Getting it sharpened seemed a worthwhile investment, especially since I was helping out a student and getting a photo as part of the deal. In the end, I got a very keen edge on my old knife for seven bucks, a story, and a photo. Not a bad deal at all.
