As recently as 1950, the Mendenhall Glacier's ice was covering this area. At present, it is miles away, but has left the evidence of it's relentless power to scour over and through solid rock. Where rocks were moved and scraped over the bedrock, gouges and lines we left behind.

This glacier has receded almost two miles in recent years, with a negative mass balance, it will continue to do so. Mendenhall Lake in the foreground is the result of this recent glacial recession.

Anything and everything, if it remains immobile for long enough, will be overwhelmed with the mosses of the Pacific temperate rainforest, the largest temperate rainforest on the planet, stretching from coastal northern California up through British Columbia Canada, on through Alaska's southeast panhandle and ending across the Gulf of Alaska on Kodiak Island.
