We didn't venture inside for proof. Locals had not seen any bears yet from hibernation, so if this had been used overwinter for a bear's hibernation, the bear was still 'in residence.'

The cerulean blue of the ice represents hundreds of years of compression into extremely dense ice, capable of sculpting rocks and boulders.

Sitaantaagu (“the Glacier Behind the Town”) or Aak’wtaaksit (“the Glacier Behind the Little Lake”) by the Tlingit Indigenous Peoples, Mendenhall Glacier is receding at a rate faster than it is moving forward, a condition called negative mass balance.

Mendenhall has receded some 1.75 miles (2.82 km) since 1929.
