As recently as 1950, the Mendenhall Glacier's ice was covering this area. At present, it is miles away, but has left the evidence of it's relentless power to scour over and through solid rock. Where rocks were moved and scraped over the bedrock, gouges and lines we left behind.

This glacier has receded almost two miles in recent years, with a negative mass balance, it will continue to do so. Mendenhall Lake in the foreground is the result of this recent glacial recession.

Coastal temperate rain forest near the Mendenhall Glacier, just north of Juneau Alaska.
Tropical rainforests win for diversity of species, but temperate rainforests beat them out for sheer size. These forests are home to some of the largest concentrations of biomass on the planet.
The only sounds we heard in this enchanting woodland were our own muffled footfalls, occasional gurgling water and the dweeeb call of varied thrushes.

Anything and everything, if it remains immobile for long enough, will be overwhelmed with the mosses of the Pacific temperate rainforest, the largest temperate rainforest on the planet, stretching from coastal northern California up through British Columbia Canada, on through Alaska's southeast panhandle and ending across the Gulf of Alaska on Kodiak Island.

Fairly strenuous several hour hike up the East Mendenhall Glacier Loop and Nugget Creek Trails, near the Mendenhall Glacier just south of Juneau, Alaska.
Such beautiful steep slopes of untouched temperate rainforest, with giant Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Everything is covered with deep, thick moss, over giant granite boulders.
