Manx Electric Railway Tramcar No.2 with Trailer No.59 waits to depart from Douglas, Derby Castle with a special working for Ramsey on 4th April 1991. Another trailer, No.58, is parked behind.
Car No.2 is one of a trio of tramcars supplied for the opening of the line in 1893. The two cars that remain in service, Nos.1 and 2, hold a joint entry in the Guinness book of records as the oldest fully operational tramcars in the world that still operate on their original running lines. Unfortunately No.3 was destroyed by fire at Laxey car sheds in 1930.

The horse trams travel approximately 1.6 miles along the seafront in Douglas. Started in 1876 by Thomas Lightfoot to take advantage of the booming tourist trade, the 3ft gauge tramway runs from the main depot at Derby Castle, along the Promenade to the Sea Terminal. The trams run from the end of March until the start of November, and are operated by Isle of Man Transport as part of their Heritage Railway offering. Many of the original cars are still in use today, and it is a popular tourist attraction. It is the oldest surviving Horse Tramway in Britain, and the only one to have operated continuously since its opening (with the exception of World War II).
