On a cloudless morning of 22nd June 1989 the 06:30 Carlisle to Leeds service was in the hands of 47597, seen here about to enter Shotlock Hill Tunnel on the Settle & Carlisle line. There had obviously been a problem as the train was running 105 minutes late at this point. Weather conditions like this are rather uncommon on the higher points of the S&C so I was unwilling to give this up as a bad job.

37408 Loch Rannoch leads 37405 at Armathwaite operating the 15:51 Carlisle to Leeds service on 18th October 2003. The loco worked diagram was a pleasant way to enjoy the scenic Settle & Carlisle line.
The diagram covered the S&C and a Leeds to Knaresborough service. It was operated from Healey Mills using three dedicated Class 37/4s, although other 37s were occasionally used. Of the three (37405/8/11) only 37405 survives and is currently a regular performer on the Norwich short set, it is owned by DRS. 408 was written off after it ran away and collided with stock at Rhymney while working on Valley Lines services. 411 was also used on those services, but was scrapped by CF Booth of Rotherham in May 2013.

On 3rd June 2015 46115 "Scots Guardsman" was employed on The Fellsman. This ran from Lancaster to Carlisle and return using the Settle and Carlisle line in both directions. The return working, 1T53 is seen here at Cumwhinton, there is little exhaust due to the warm dry weather on this day.

The Western Heights railtour was operated by Pathfinder Tours on September 3rd 2005 starting at Bristol running to Carlisle via the Settle & Carlisle route and returning via the West Coast Main Line. Here 1Z29 is seen in the hands pf D1015 Western Champion arriving at Carlisle climbing up from the S&C for a break before the journey back to Bristol. It had been dull up to this time and an unlucky patch of sunlight contrived to put the side of the train in shadow, Carlisle had been selected as a place where the train would be travelling slowly, oh the joys of 100 iso films!
