Speaking of bridges, it's almost impossible to get the drop on this old bridge. For most of the year, it sits quietly tucked away behind a dense growth of trees and brush. But come Autumn the trees obligingly peel their cloaks to give a us a little peek at this shy old soul. And like all things in life--you gotta seize the moment while you can. A big thanks to Mother Nature for having the wisdom to make the seasons.

You can enter the hideout better on black.

Bridges are such a simple idea. You stretch them from one to point to another and they give you the means to cross over obstacles that can't be traversed by foot or vehicle. I think it's the same with people. We build collaborative bridges to span our differing views and use them to live together as a society. Lately, I've been thinking that bridge building may be a dying art and that fills me with sadness. It would be a shame to get permanently stuck on one side or the other. Think of all the beautiful scenery we would miss.

The leaves turn, the wind blows and eventually the world will rest as winter blankets the land. But right now I can still exalt in these crisp Autumn days where the instinct to store away the nuts and acorns is still the prevailing mission. Soon there will be time enough for sleep. This year, I'm planning to hibernate like a grizzly.

The inside view of the Oregon Creek Bridge built in 1860. It is also known as Freeman's Crossing. The bridge itself may be old but the grafitti comes from newer times where some people have an inveterate need to memorialize their existence for the rest of the world to behold and in the process deface some pretty amazing stuff. Oh well, I remember reading about one of Rodin's statues that was dropped during shipment to New York losing some critical pieces in the process. Rodin's response was amazingly nonchalant. He had the ultimate "art for art's sake" perspective--an art piece is a living thing so whatever happens to it during it's life is the way it should be. I guess if Rodin could let go of one of his masterpieces so easily than I shouldn't lose sleep over a couple cans of spray paint.

A full and rewarding graffiti experience can be had on black. Actually, I don't bemoan all graffiti. I have seen some fantastic artwork out there. But I wouldn't include the work on the inside of this bridge as representative of the higher art form.

This covered bridge, reputed to be the longest covered span in the U.S. is the Grandaddy of the old Bridge and Yuba River Crossings in Nevada County. At least in my humble opinion.

The inscription on the marker located at the site says:
"Built in 1862 by David Isaac John Wood with lumber from his mill in Sierra County, this bridge was part of the Virginia Turnpike Company toll road which served the northern mines and the busy Nevada Comstock Lode. Utilizing a combination truss and arch construction, it is one of the oldest housed spans in the west and the longest single-span wood-covered bridge in the United States."

By the way, you can't drive across this bridge or even walk on it anymore for that matter. But it's cool to look at. I sleep better at night just knowing that it's there.
