We were treated to quite a spectacle as this storm front approached Petrovac from the sea. In the distance is Sveta Nedjelja Island, approx. 1km from the harbour. The small island has the church of St. Nedjelja perched on its highest point. The original 14th century church (rebuilt in 1979 due to an earthquake) was apparently built by a grateful Greek sailor who survived a shipwreck on its shores - probably on a similar night to this! eventually the wind and rain become so severe that I had to retreat indoors.
Lasted 3 hours, but by morning cloudless skies and 30 degrees again.

Taken very early yesterday morning, group of Greater Flamingo. I had already photographed them stood in the lagoon and was almost back to the car, then noticed out of the corner of my eye that they had taken off and luckily were flying parallel to me.
An amazing bird in every way.
Taken near Olhao, Algarve, Portugal. They do not breed here, but over winter in the salt pans and estuaries of the Ria Formosa Nature Park.

Long exposure shot using a 10 stop B + W filter.
Just returned from a week on this beautiful Greek island.
Helis beach was a short walk from our hotel near Svoronata. Kefalonia is comparatively unspoilt, only having been 'discovered' on the tourist map following the release of the film Captain Correlli's Mandolin.

This is a very small dragonfly - approx. 1 inch long, but very beautiful! Think this is the second smallest found in the USA. Taken on the lake side dock at my in-laws house last week in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. Back lit by the setting sun.
For best view hit 'L' for large on black.

This is the only Hummingbird found in New Jersey (in fact the only one found east of the Great Plains) and migrates from its winter home in Mexico. Considering its tiny size this is an amazing feat. The Ruby Throat drinks nectar and also eats insects (often taking trapped bugs out of spiders webs).
There were 2 males visiting the nectar feeders and doing battle with each other at the Great Swamp visitor centre - in anticipation of females arriving.
I stood nearby and must admit took an awful lot of snaps to try and get a flight shot in some sort of focus without the aid of high speed flash etc - even at 1/6400 there is some wing movement. Quite an experience to get buzzed by Hummingbirds!
Many thanks to Cliff Miles for the trip.
