Class 47 diesel 47209 arrives into Peterborough station from the north & presumably heading for London.

The fresh ballast and platform construction work are signs of the 1972 the track layout remodelling which swept away the old GNR station and provided high speed through lines and two new platforms at this ECML station. The ECML was electrified from the mid-80s and today's railway through Peterborough has completely changed from this early 1970s scene.

The last & longest leg of our railway journey from Mallaig to Doncaster was from Edinburgh Waverley to Doncaster via Newcastle & York.

Here we are passing Class 40 diesel 40167 in the adjacent platform as we set off from Waverley behind Deltic 55014 The Duke of Wellington's Regiment - not that you can see our engine. We had had to rush to catch the train so it wasn't until we stopped in Newcastle that I got the chance to nip up front to discover what was pulling us.

Built in 1961 English Electric D367 was allocated to Haymarket shed for 20 years before moving to Longsight in 1981. As 40167 it was withdrawn from there in February 1984 and cut-up later that year.

Above the 40 is Carlton Hill with the steps of Jacob's Ladder winding down the hill.

The third leg of our journey from Mallaig to Doncaster was the 15.30 train from Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley.

The train was a push-pull with six Mk2 coaches between a Class 27 diesel at either end. This engine 27205 was on the rear and 27210 was at the head. The clock tower of the North British Hotel on Princes Street is just visible over the bridge parapet.

We were pulled onward to Newcastle by Deltic 55014 The Duke of Wellington's Regiment.

Here we are on the West Highland line between Bridge of Orchy and Tyndrum crossing one of the viaducts of the Horseshoe curve. We were on the second leg of our journey from Mallaig to Doncaster being pulled by Class 27 diesel 27017 with 7 coaches. Another class member 27036 had taken the 3-coach train to Fort William where the extra four coaches were attached.

Unfortunately about an hour later 27017 failed south of Crianlarich in sight of Loch Lomond. It took 2 hours before 25246 arrived from the south to rescue us at 14.45.
