In 1982 Cricklewood MPD had five class 08 shunters (vacuum braked 08603 and 08606 and dual braked 08768, 08902 and 08943) on its allocation for three duties, Cricklewood depot pilot (vacuum braked), Cricklewood carriage sidings pilot (dual braked) and St Pancras station pilot (dual braked). Of the three allocated dual braked class 08’s the regular engine for the St Pancras station pilot duty at this time was 08943 and here it is on the 27th February 1982 about to shunt a set of coaches at St Pancras.

Locomotive History
08943 was originally D4173 and was built at Darlington works entering traffic in June 1962. It was originally allocated to the Western Region with spells at Newport Ebbw Junction, Cardiff Canton and Bristol until transferred to the London Midland Region at Willesden in July 1974 moving to Cricklewood around 1976. With the closure of Cricklewood depot in 1987 08943 transferred back Willesden. In July 1988 it was withdrawn for traffic however it became the works shunter at Crewe works and remained on this duty until sold in 2009 to HNRC. It can currently (December 2012) be found as the depot pilot at Central Rivers.

Locomotive History
20178 was originally D8178 and was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. It entered traffic in December 1966 allocated to the Nottingham Division (Toton). Apart from an eight month spell at Thornaby from March 1989 it would spend its entire career at Toton until withdrawn in December 1989. It was broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow during May 1992. 20194 was originally D8194 and entered traffic in February 1967, allocated to Toton. It was withdrawn in January 1992 and was sold to DRS in 1997 who refurbished and renumbered it 20313. It was stored by DRS in December 2008 broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham during June 2013.

Locomotive History
31285 was built by Brush at Loughborough and entered traffic in October 1961 as D5817. In June 1967 it was fitted with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT power unit in lieu of its unreliable Mirrlees 12 cylinder power unit. After thirty four years service it was withdrawal in July 1995 when it was part of the Transrail infrastructure fleet based at Wigan Springs Branch. Following eight years in store it returned to traffic as part of the Network Rail Infrastructure fleet in October 2003. It is currently (February 2017) stored at Nemesis Rail, Burton. 31201 was built by Brush, Loughborough as D5625 and entered traffic in June 1960. It was withdrawn in February 1999 and broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham during May 2004.

31313 drifts through Loughborough light engine, 25th February 1982.

Locomotive History
31313 was built by Brush in the adjacent Falcon Works at Loughborough as D5847, entering traffic in June 1962, allocated to Darnall MPD. During November 1967 D5847 was released from Doncaster works following classified repair during which its unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine was replaced by a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine. 31313 was an early Class 31 casualty being withdrawn and broken up immediately at Doncaster Works in May 1983, just over a year after this photograph was taken.

Locomotive History
45020 was built in Derby works as D26, entering traffic in April 1961 and was for most of its career a Leeds engine arriving at Holbeck in June 1961 and not leaving until May 1978 when transferred to York. Its stay at York was brief and in January 1979 it transferred to Tinsley and its final transfer was in July 1983 when it moved to Toton from where it was withdrawn in December 1985. It would languish following withdrawal for nearly three years until broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in August 1988.
