Standing on temporary bogies in the yard at Derby Litchurch Lane carriage works is Gloucester class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50340, 13th August 1977.

Unit History
M50340 is a class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and was originally paired with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory Sc56095. Although intended for the Scottish Region it entered traffic in May 1957 initially allocated to Longsight MPD (on loan) for south Manchester suburban duties before moving to Leith Central for Edinburgh District local services. Only forty twin power/trailer sets were built to this design making them rather rare. By 1965 twenty nine of the forty sets were working from Scottish depots, with M50340 allocated to Hamilton, with the remaining eleven sets working in the Manchester area. The Scottish sets were displaced at the end of the 1960’s with the majority being transferred to Norwich, however M50340 was one of three sets retained at Hamilton until the mid 1970’s with M50340 transferring to Tyseley in May 1975. Withdrawals commenced in 1972 and continued at regular intervals throughout the 1970’s. The survivors in the latter years could found in the Manchester and Birmingham areas as Norwich dispensed with the class by withdrawal or transfer as fast as it could. In 1977 M50340 was withdrawn February 1981 and broken up in July 1984.

Newton Heath depot has formed Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co Class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50342 into a Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co Class 104 triple set which stands in the platform at Manchester Victoria, 20th July 1976.

Unit History
Forty power/trailer two car sets were built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co to this design in two batches making them rather rare. Twenty nine sets were for the Scottish Region (allocated to Leith Central) and eleven sets for the London Midland Region (allocated to Longsight) although the first nine Scottish Region sets were initially loaned to the London Midland Region. The Scottish sets were displaced at the end of the 1960’s with the majority being transferred to Norwich, however withdrawals commenced in 1972 and continued at regular intervals throughout the 1970’s. The survivors in the latter years could found in the Manchester area as Norwich dispensed with the class by withdrawal or transfer as fast as it could. Sc50342 entered traffic in June 1957 paired with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) Sc 56097 allocated on loan to Longsight before heading north to Leith Central. It returned to Longsight in May 1975 and survived in traffic until withdrawn in August 1982. It was broken up during September 1984.

Waiting to depart Leicester on a local service to Peterborough is Norwich two car set 68 with Gloucester class 100 Driving Motor Brake Second E50346 leading a Cravens class 105 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL), 14th January 1978.

Unit History
E50346 was built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and was originally paired with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory Sc56101. Although intended for the Scottish Region it entered traffic in July 1957 initially allocted to Longsight MPD (on loan) for south Manchester suburban duties before moving to Leith Central for Edinburgh District local services. The class 100 units were rather rare as only forty twin power/trailer sets were built to this design. By the mid 1960’s the class was split between Hamilton and Longsight with the Scottish units becoming surplus in the late 1960’s and migrating to East Anglia with E50346 transfering to Cambridge in May 1968 and moving on to Norwich. E56101 did not find favour in East Anglia as it was withdrawn in October 1972 but E50346 continued in service until withdrawn in September 1982, its last couple of years allocated to Longsight, the last bastion of the class and broken up in April 1984.

Slightly misjudged the composition of these two Class 100 two car diesel multiple units paused at Ashburys with a Manchester Piccadilly – Rose Hill service, 3rd July 1976. The leading unit is formed of Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50350 and Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) M56105 which has been downgraded to all second class.

The survivors in the latter years could found in the Manchester area as Norwich dispensed with the class by withdrawal or transfer as fast as it could. M50350 is still paired here with its original partner M56105 and entered service in September 1957. M50350 was withdrawn in November 1981 and broken up in November 1982. M56105 would last in service longer than its partner and was not withdrawn until July 1983 and was broken up in May 1984.
