The last image from my New Mexico trip.

The beginning of this trip was fraught with problems: my GPS stopped working, my tripod was damaged on in transit, my laptop died and my bags didn't make it to Albuquerque on the same flight I did. That first day, on the drive from Albuquerque to Farmington, I had intended to scout Chaco Canyon, but after having to wait for my bag, there was no time. Instead, I took random detours down dirt roads off 550 to explore and photograph. This was one of these random dirt roads that I drove down around sunset. The light was lovely, the landscape amazing - what a beginning to the trip.

The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is an area of badlands, covered in wonderful eroded rock formations and hoodoos.

A last image from Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico.

What an incredible evening is was as this storm rolled in. Neither of us (I was out there with fellow photographer Eric Gail) wanted to leave, since the skies were still so amazing, but the park closes at sundown. I was happily still shooting when I noticed that the park ranger had turned on an alarm at the parking area and set the lights flashing on his truck. I reluctantly started walking back to the car, but every time I turned around the sky was still amazingly, achingly dramatic, so I kept shooting - handheld, high ISO - and he kept shouting at me, "Keep walking!! The park closed 10 minutes ago. C'mon. Keep walking!!". Turning around for one final shot (this shot) is just about as disobedient as I get.

I know this image is fatally flawed - noisy, handheld and shaky - but it reminds me of the thrill of that amazing storm in that incredibly special place and sheer joy of being out there with my camera, trying to capture it all.

Chaco Canyon is a truly amazing place. Located in a remote part of New Mexico, a long drive down a dirt road from the nearest outpost (which is essentially just a gas station). Chaco Canyon contains a series of complexes (pueblos) built by the Anasazi (or ancestral Puebloans) between 900 and 1150. It's really hard to understand the scale and beauty of the place until you get there and see it, but trust me, it's truly breath-taking. This is an image of Pueblo Bonito (the largest pueblo in Chaco) as a storm rolled in.

I arrived in the afternoon, but towards sunset this fantastic storm built up around the edges of the canyon and I shot Pueblo Bonito (the largest pueblo in Chaco) as this storm rolled in. What a magical evening!
