Drivers on US 101 in Grays Harbor County near Artic are using a temporary, one-lane detour road near milepost 72.6 at Rock Crusher Hill. The road guides traffic around the construction project. An automated signal (in the distance) will control one alternating lane of traffic on the detour road. The speed limit on the detour road will be 25 mph and overwidth vehicles are not allowed. The detour road allows contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation to shore up an unstable hillside (not pictured) and prevent further roadway settlement. The project is expected to be complete this fall. See more at the project web page: www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/us101/nsalmoncrkbridgeslope/

This area of US 101 at milepost 72.6 in Grays Harbor County is located on a pre-historic landslide. This section of roadway has had long-term settlement leading to repeated and unexpected lane closures. Crews previously have only been able to make temporary roadway repairs, until driving rains retriggered the pre-historic landslide. During summer 2015, crews began the process of making permanent repairs. The repair includes drilling 190 shafts deep into the earth below the lanes of US 101 (left). Workers will fill the shafts with rock, forming a buttress that will shore up the unstable hillside and prevent further roadway settlement. The permanent fix will reduce the potential for slide-related closures and reduce historically-recurring maintenance costs.
