WSDOT crews inspect the guardrail along SR 542 about six miles east of Glacier on Nov. 16, 2015. The Nooksack River eroded its bank just south of highway, leaving guardrail posts hanging. The highway was reduced to one lane on Nov. 17, with portable traffic signals controlling traffic in the westbound lane. Repairs are expected to take several weeks.

The Nooksack eroded its bank about six miles east of Glacier along the south side of SR 542, and by Nov. 16, 2015, the erosion exposed guardrail posts along the eastbound lane. WSDOT reduced the highway to one lane using the westbound lane and put out portable traffic signals to control traffic. Emergency repairs began Nov. 20 and are expected to take several weeks to complete.

In mid-November 2015 The Nooksack River began eroding the back just south of SR 542 about six miles east of Glacier. For the safety of drivers, WSDOT reduced the highway to one lane between mileposts 39 and 40 on Nov. 17, with portable signals controlling traffic in the westbound lane. Emergency repairs began Nov. 20; it will take several weeks to complete the work.

Erosion from high water in the Nooksack River cut into the bank below SR 542 about six miles east of Glacier in November 2015. That exposed guardrail posts and undercut part of the highway’s eastbound lane and layers of geological strata. WSDOT rebuilt the roadbed under the eastbound lane to restore two-way traffic on the highway.
