In order for crews to remove outdated and undersized culverts under SR 121, crews must fully remove the roadway. Crews using heavy equipment are preparing to install much improved box culverts which are intended to aid fish passage in Blooms Ditch. Additional information is available at the project web page:

This photo shows crews installing a large box culvert that will carry Blooms Ditch under SR 121 Tilley Road in Thurston County. When complete, the project will help mimic a natural stream bed. The goal of the culvert is to provide an environment that allows the stream to meander naturally as if the culvert wasn’t even there. This project on SR 121 (Tilley Road) in Thurston County replaces outdated culverts with big improved box culverts. These changes improve fish habitat by slowing the velocity of the stream and creates more pools and eddies for fish. When complete, an additional 3.1 miles of upstream habitat will be accessible to migrating fish. See more at the project web page: www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr121/bloomsditchfishbarriers/
