A WSDOT project will make it easier for travelers in the Taylor Towne area of Mason County to access US 101 from Lynch Road, thanks to the addition of acceleration lanes in both directions. WSDOT designed the project to help reduce the potential for collisions and improve traffic flow. Each new acceleration lane is approximately a quarter-mile in length, which is similar to four football fields. Both are intended to help Lynch Road drivers reach highway speeds before merging onto the highway. The project also will create better sight distance for drivers stopped at Lynch Road turning left towards Olympia. Additional improvements include new highway illumination, additional guardrail and drainage systems. See more at the project web page: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/US101/lynchrdsafety/home

To improve the ability for drivers at Lynch Road to see oncoming northbound US 101 traffic in Mason County, crews are working to realign northbound US 101 closer to the highway median. The reconfiguration and associated roadway striping will modify the stop location on Lynch Road who people who are turning onto US 101, allowing travelers to better focus on northbound US 101 traffic. This project will also build a new 1,140-foot-long acceleration lane in the highway median for drivers merging onto southbound US 101, eliminating the current need for drivers to wait in the highway median before joining southbound US 101 traffic. This enhancement will not only reduce the potential for collisions but will help reduce congestion for Lynch Road drivers turning onto southbound US 101. www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/US101/lynchrdsafety/home

A key portion of this project added new pavement in the highway median. The new pavement allows crews to ultimately slightly shift both lanes of northbound US 101 at Taylor Towne in Mason County.
The reconfiguration and new roadway striping will relocate the area where Lynch Road drivers stop before crossing US 101.
This enhancement will bolster sight distance for Lynch Road drivers crossing northbound US 101 to reach southbound US 101. The new asphalt also creates the new roadway where drivers will have acceleration lanes for Lynch Road drivers accessing both directions of US 101.

This image shows crews reinstalling cable barrier between the northbound and southbound lanes of US 101 in Mason County. Crews temporarily removed the barrier so they could widen the footprint of the northbound lanes. The new roadway surface will accommodate new acceleration lanes from Lynch Road to both directions of US 101. This project in Taylor Towne also included new guardrail and additional intersection lighting.
