After Dry Creek's channel was dammed by a Nov. 5, 2022, debris flow, the creek was redirected to a channel that had a smaller culvert under SR 410. The debris flow plugged the smaller culvert and forced water and up to 2 feet of rocks, trees and debris to spill across SR 410 a few miles below Crystal Mountain Ski Resort.

When a Nov. 5, 2022, debris flow changed Dry Creek's path and spilled onto SR 410 a few miles below Crystal Mountain, it also scoured the embankment on the downstream side of the highway. Our maintenance crews were able to clear and check the roadway, before reopening SR 410 a few hours after it was closed.

Heavy rains in early November caused a debris flow to race down Dry Creek's channel near Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. The debris plugged Dry Creek's path with up to 50 feet of mud, rocks and boulders, permanently blocking the creek's channel and forcing it to find a new path to the White River only a few hundred feet above SR 410. It also forced us to find a way to mitigate the risk of a spring runoff from causing similar or worse damage to SR 410.

Our contractor crews prepared three pipes to run under SR 410 and serve as overflow to the existing 24-inch culvert along Dry Creek's new channel. To reduce the amount of time it took to install the overflow pipe under the vital link to Crystal Mountain Ski Area, crews assembled the three sections of pipe along the side of the highway in advance.

Our contractor crews excavated a section of SR 410 along Dry Creek's new channel so three sections of overflow pipe could be placed under the road surface. Though one lane was closed during the project, traffic to and from Crystal Mountain Ski Resort was able to alternate with only short delays.
