It’s likely people give little thought to this bridge. It carries Interstate 5 over a key road for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Unfortunately, the span has been hit over and over again by overweight vehicles. Crews are now building a taller span. The new bridge will also accommodate the new HOV lanes. It takes a lot of planning to do this kind of work. Workers are building a new span while keeping I-5 open. It takes phases to do the work. Crews first built the new section of the bridge (right). Once the bridge opened, travelers were shifted onto the new bridge. Workers will demolish the existing bridge between the shifted northbound and southbound lanes. Once built, traffic will move onto the new section of bridge. Workers then will demolish and rebuild the final section of the bridge (left). wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-mo...

Bird’s-eye view what will be the new the Steilacoom-DuPont Road interchange. The new overpass will create new space to extend the I-5 HOV lanes further south. The new overpass will increase vertical clearance over I-5. The new overpass will be a diverging diamond interchange. It will provide increased access to I-5 and new access to Steilacoom-DuPont Road. More information is available at the project webpage. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-mo...

It is not easy to rebuild I-5 while keeping it open. This overhead view shows how crews keep people moving while improving the highway. Workers are rebuilding a bridge that carries I-5 over Pendleton Avenue on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The bridge has a history of being hit by over height vehicles. Crews are now building a much taller span that carries I-5 over the military road that’s closed to the public. Workers have built a section of the new bridge (left). After moving the path of the highway, crews will demolish the existing bridge between both directions of I-5. The process will continue until there is an completed bridge across the highway. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-mo...

Construction crew workers help guide the 75-foot-long and 60,000-pound girders into place on I-5 over Pendleton Avenue near JBLM on Monday night (1/6/25).

This work is connected to I-5 corridor improvements between Mounts Road and Steilacoom-DuPont Road. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-mo...

This overhead view shows the new path between DuPont and Interstate 5. Travelers will use a new roundabout on Steilacoom-DuPont Road. People will use the new route to access a new overpass (foreground). The new overpass will be a diverging diamond interchange. It will be like the diverging diamond interchange at I-5 in Lacey. The overpass will have a path for people who walk or ride between DuPont and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. See more at the project webpage. wsdot.wa.gov/construction-planning/search-projects/i-5-mo...
