Towering over the modern city of Avignon, Christ crucified. Provence is a region full of religious iconography.
The title is taken from the Greek "Κύριε ἐλέησον, Χριστὲ ἐλέησον, Κύριε ἐλέησον" or "Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison" from the Latin mass and meaning "Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy."

In fact, people probably would have danced beneath the bridge (sous le pont) where it crossed a river island (the Ile de Barthelasse)
