Frost formation between panes of sealed glass.

This tiny frost formation is about 1/4 inch (6.5mm) across.

Taken with Canon EF100mm macro lens + 13mm extension tube.

Ice crystals in high cirrus clouds forming a 22° halo around the moon. As folklore predicts, within twelve hours it was stormy, in 24 hours the temperature dropped dramatically.

Reddish colors were visible on the inner side of the ring, bluish color on it's outer edge, where the ring is more diffuse.

This tiny frost 'butterfly' is growing, yesterday it was but a quarter inch, now it has 'spread it's wings' a bit, and gained size, almost doubled.

Of particular interest to me are the formations across the bottom, too small to see with the naked unaided eye, but springing to 'life' like tiny cotyledons from a bursting seed.

Chugach Mountains, northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Hwy.

My first hike and camping at the Matanuska Glacier in the early 1970s was very different from what one can experience now. There was no 'admission' to glacier access, no 'fee' to hike and explore.

Now, it is highly restricted according to what you are willing to pay.... from the cheapest $30 per person self-guided to several hundreds of dollars for guided day hikes, the 'powers that be' have highly restricted access over the years, and found a way to make money from 'ownership' of one of Nature's free natural wonders. \:-[

I was hopeful that this clear morning would present a bit of alpenglow, if I could just get to a good spot before the sun came up. I noticed on the way that the thermometer on my car dropped down to -40, and that made me pretty nervous, because it could be even colder, and I wouldn't be able to tell... that's as low as the car thermometer will go.

When I slowed to a stop, the car began to run funny, and I thought I could smell anitfreeze... so I hurriedly snapped this shot and turned around for home.

Who knows how cold it got? Made it home fine, and just before arriving at home the thermometer went up to -39.

All's well that ends well! Glad I didn't have to walk.
