Recently drove through the Warwickshire village of Barton and photographed this cottage. The name intrigued me and is clearly derived from the red post box located in the front wall of the house.
Although the property appears to be of some age, it does not show as a listed building. However, I have come across an old photograph of Barton which shows the cottage around 1930. A sign hanging on the front of the building advertises Lyons Tea and the letterbox is clearly visible as it is now. It is quite possible this was the village shop which may well have included a post office.

This thatched farmhouse in the village of Shottery in Warwickshire was built in 1463 and has been enlarged a couple of times over the centuries into what we see today.
In 1543 the Hathaway family moved in and subsequently 13 generations of the family lived there until it was acquired by a trust in 1892. It was the childhood home of Anne Hathaway and it was here that William Shakespeare (the famous playwright, poet and actor) wooed Anne prior to them being married in 1582.
The cottage is now a tourist attraction operated by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust who also own William’s birthplace in the centre of nearby Stratford upon Avon.
Visitors are free to walk around the garden and escorted visits to the 12 rooms inside show what life was like 500 years ago. Very interesting but it can be very busy.
The property is a grade 1 listed building which gives it legal protection from demolition or major alterations without prior approval from the Local Authority - Stratford on Avon District Council.

On a recent visit to Warwickshire we visited Charlecote Park which is located on land that has been in the possession of the Lucy family since 1247. The magnificent house was built by Sir Thomas Lucy in 1558 and is surrounded by its own deer park on the banks of the River Avon. The estate was passed to the National Trust in 1946 in lieu of death duties owed to the Government and has been administered by them ever since.
Quite rightly the house is grade 1 listed property and open the public. No demolition or major alterations can be made without prior approval from the Local Authority thereby protecting the building for the nation.
